As a dollmaker and sculptor, I am continuously amazed at the emotional connection that I form with the figures that I’ve made. Creating dolls satisfies my yearning to create, to stir emotion, and sometimes, simply to tell a story. I feel a sense of accomplishment when a doll evokes joy, or even when it evokes a sense of discomfort, especially when that discomfort translates to conversation or introspection.
My work draws from lived experience, historical fiction, fantasy, mythology, and the simple joy of creating. Whether the idea comes from me or is entrusted to me by someone else, I create each figure with anticipation, care, and a genuine love for the process.
My journey as an artist is also deeply connected to the rich history of Black dollmaking. I honor and revere my ancestors—the Black mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and artists who created figures for many different reasons. The Black dolls they created reflected love, beauty, identity, dignity, and belonging. Their creativity and resourcefulness are part of the artistic lineage that I carry with me. This history is an important part of who I am as a creator and continues to shape the way I see and create figures.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Denise Satterfield is a polymer clay doll sculptor who was taught to make art dolls by a very talented and generous Maine based artist, Hawthorne Lindsey Smith. Her work sits at the intersection of craftsmanship, cultural identity, and storytelling. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Denise’s life journey is as multifaceted as her art.
A US Air Force veteran, her career has spanned disciplines from finance and software engineering to teaching high school mathematics at Shrewsbury High School in Massachusetts. A unique fusion of her love of mathematics, which results in a respect for patterns and an ordered universe, and a lifelong passion for creation forms the foundation of her sculptural practice.
Denise’s creative evolution began with watercolor painting in the early 2000s, but her true artistic calling emerged from a lifelong fascination with Black dolls, which she began collecting in the 1990s. Guided and mentored by a generous polymer clay doll artist, she transitioned from collector to maker, mastering the delicate art of figurative doll sculpture.
Operating under her studio name, Persephone’s Dreams, Denise handcrafts figurative works that celebrate Black representation, history, and the emotional nuances of human connection. Her sculptures evoke both intimacy and strength, often exploring themes of identity, resilience, and adaptability—as seen in her award-winning piece Code Switching, which earned an Honorable Mention at ArtsWorcester's Change exhibition.
Denise's work studio is located at the Creative Hub in Worcester Massachusetts. She is an active member of ArtsWorcester, the New England Black Artists Collective, and the New England Sculpture Association. Her work has been showcased in notable regional juried exhibitions, including shows at the Worcester Center for Crafts, the Hanover Theatre, and ArtsWorcester in collaboration with the Fitchburg Art Museum.
Through Persephone’s Dreams, Denise continues to honor the tradition of art doll making, offering viewers striking, soulful figures that invite reflection and tell profound stories.
